Ok boys and girls we are going to learn about wifi and community networks Lets go to basics before we start with the more complicated things. I am asuming that u have some basic knowledge about LAN (crimping cables , switches & hubs etc..) so we will jump to Wifi. The three most important things about wifi are:1.Devices (Access Points (AP) , PCI Cards , Usb Wifi ...etc) 2.Antennas (Directional , Omni-Directional , Sector) 3.Cabbles (Pigtals , Connectors ...) More about this 3 things i will wright about in diffrent articles.Ok , the wifi has 3 standards (we are talking about conventional wifi the 3.8Ghz Wifi is only aloved in USA and not worldwide) the standard are 802.11b/g/a.The b standard works in 2.4Ghz band ,g standard also works in the same band and the a standard works with on 5.8Ghz band.So whats the diffrence between b and g ?.The diffrence is that b works in theory 11Mbps and g works on 54Mbps.The b in reality works about 600-800 KB/s and b workd about 1-2MB/s.The big diffrence betwene those two (besides the spped) is that b standard is way flexibile than g.The b can go to larger distances , it doesent need much power like g , and it puts up with bad antennas and cables. But ill rather chose g because of speed at the cost of expensive equipment. Those days the equipment isnt expensive actualy its wery cheap. So the b standard is slowly disapiring.Lets talk about the a standard as i said it works on the 5.8Ghz band and it goes to the speed 54Mbps (in theory) practicly it can go between 2 and 5 MB/s (it depends what kind of equipment u are using). The a standard is realy great thing but in the past it was expensive so the g standard was the most popular.A litlle about community networks i worked on 2 such project BGWireless(www.bgwireless.org) and BgLan(www.bglan.co.yu) -doesent exist any more. The both project were in Belgrade (Serbia).Huh u ask how come there is the wifi so expanded?.The Serbia had a 10 year isolation from the world (sancions) and 2 wars in that period , so the country was in deep shet :) , And until 2002 the only internet acces was Dial Up , and then the WiFi came in both ISP`s and people realized the power and abbilityes of the WiFi.So then in 2003 came Bgwireless (Group of enghusiast with idea to network all of belgrade and its a mix of Cable and Wireless). The Organisation is a big sucsess it has about 30 nodes covering almoust all of Belgrade.I dont work with Bgwireless project. The other BgLan project was a small network (my and my friends) just screwing with wifi equipment :).The Bigest Projest of that kind is New York City Wireless known as NYCWireless (www.nycwireless.net).
