Well, you know me... I thought about it for months and months, but when the moment finally struck me, it was done in days.
The new "Genesis" server (which is actually a VPS hosted for us by Linode.com), is now online and I am in the process of moving some users over to it to assist me with getting the rest of the software tested and installed.
Along with the new server, I've added a few new features onto the website, most notably the "Forums". I decided to use Agora forums for our needs, so that it could most closely intergrate with our current Joomla website.
Coming very soon, I will re-write the "how can I get a shell?" page. Our community is very old now, some might even say we're nearly a relic as old as Slackware itself, but I think it's time we breathe new life! Hence the "Genesis" moniker.
I hope to renew the interest in our cause and in our community by adding additional interaction on the website. The basis for shell membership in the future will be -- Active forum user -> Website content Author -> Shell User. Also, with the exception of a few privileged users, all accounts will be time based - if you want to keep the shell, you need to keep contributing.
Hopefully this news finds you all well. For the time being I have already moved all primary domains to the new server, if you need to reach your account on the old server you will need to be sure to address it as "alpha.aeshells.org".

It's the one thing i'm sure none of our current users want to hear. After many years of adding new "free community users", we've found that everyone helps out a lot - at first. Over the next few weeks, we will be removing all free accounts that no longer contribute to the community. Users that are to be removed will have the option to sign up for paid shell accounts. If you are unsure if you're own account is in jeopardy, you may email

to ask. Also, it's not too late! If you know that you haven't been doing much for the community lately, it's time to step up if you want to keep your free shell account! |

With all the new users over the last few months, growth was gonna have to come! Starting later today, I'll have a new server provisioned and brought online. Account creation will be paused, so anyone that signed up in the last few days will have a brief delay receiving their login information, but please be patient. You will be among the first new users on the new server! The new server will be provisioned for paid users only, leaving the Alpha server to function for all community users. Anyone have any ideas to name the server? This will be the server's first and primary vhost... what do you think? Alex |

Thanks everyone for visiting and helping to test everything over the last few days. As you've seen various features have been flickering on and off as I decide what to put on the site, and where! Part of making a complete site, I want to make sure we have everything in place that everyone can find and use. Please, let me know if you have any ideas, also, be sure to vote in the poll: let me know what YOU want next! |
